2nd Cardiometabolic Disorders/ Diabetes Congress

The 2nd Cardimetabolic Disorders/ Diabetes Congress was held on September 17th 2017 at Hotel Margalla, Islamabad which focuses on the recognition of cardiometabolic disorders as a global health problem among non-communicable disorders.
Assistant Professor Biochemistry SCM, Dr. Afrose Liaquat opened the event with the introduction to the cardiometabolic disease and the rationale for organizing this event. The first lecture was on epidemiology by Assistant Professor Community Medicine SCM, Dr. Sajida Naseem; she enlightened on the increasing prevalence of these disorders worldwide. The session was followed by the talk on the pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome by Consultant Endocrinologist SIH, Dr. Sheraz Khan. He discussed the basic mechanisms of the disease. Consultant Endocrinologist SIH, Dr. Osama Ishtiaq then opened an extensive interactive session on the oral management of Diabetes Mellitus which was followed by insulin management discussion delivered by Associate Consultant Endocrinologist SIH, Dr. Umer Yousaf Raja. The participants cleared there queries by direct question answer sessions during and after each lecture. The dyslipidemia update was presented by Consultant Endocrinologist Kulsoom International Hospital, Dr. Tufail Ijaz, who emphasized on the recent cutoff values of the lipid profile and why it is so essential to maintain it within these limits. The session was followed by a very interesting talk on the dietary modifications and its impact on cardiometabolic disorders by Nutritionist Allama Iqbal Open University, Dr. Hajra Ahmed who is a nutritionist from Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad. Dr. Saeed-ullah Shah, Consultant Cardiologist SIH, opened the post lunch session with an eye opening lecture on preventive cardiology and discussed the impact of life style modifications in reducing the overall disease progression. This was followed by the in depth presentation on obesity and its drug management by Consultant Endocrinologist Northwest General Hospital & Research Centre, Dr. Arshad Hussain. The surgical management of obesity was covered by Consultant General Surgeon SIH, Dr. Arif Malik through bariatric surgery. The last session was dedicated to research in which various ongoing and completed research projects were presented by Dr. Afrose Liaquat and Ms Kinza Waqar (Medical research collaborative group-Kindle Foundation). The participants showed active interest in these sessions. The presenters urged the participants to fill the gaps in research as the local data in this context is still lacking. The participants gave a positive feedback on the conference as a whole as it provided an excellent opportunity to be updated on mechanisms and treatment of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia and how they relate to cardiovascular disorders. Moreover, the knowledge gained from the presentations can be immediately applied in the clinical practice instantaneously. At the end of the event 06 CME contact hours certificates were distributed by the department of PGME & CME among registered participants.
It was a collaborative event of Dr. Osma Ishtiaq (Consultant Endocrinologist) and Dr. Saeed-ullah Shah (Consultant Cardiologist) of Shifa international hospital and Dr. Afrose Liaquat (Department of Biochemistry) of Shifa College of Medicine under the umbrella of Shifa Tamer-e-Millat University, Islamabad.
